You don’t need acres of space to enjoy stunning foliage, blooms, incredible texture, and even fruit. Many trees and shrubs thrive in containers, offering excellent height, fragrance, and variety to small space gardens

TREES
A classic choice
One of the best trees for patio growing, particularly here in B.C. are Japanese Maples, due to their compact root system and plentiful dwarf varieties. Japanese Maples offer a wide range of foliage colours, shapes, and bark textures, adding tons of visual interest to your space.
Some of our favourite include:
- ‘Koto no ito’
- ‘Fireball’
- ‘Lion's Mane’ (Shishigashira)
- ‘Sharp's Pygmy’
- ‘Taylor’
- Any of dissectum (weeping) variety

EDIBLES
Your own orchard!
Dwarf fruit varieties, smaller trees, and large herbs are excellent for patio growing. Ensure plenty of sun and good air circulation, while protecting your crops from frost and high winds.
A few suggestions:
- ‘Golden Prolific’ Nectarine
- Feijoa
- Olives
- Rosemary
- Dwarf Apples (look for M27 rootstock)
- Dwarf Cherries (look for Gisela 5 rootstock)

Tree forms are plants and shrubs that have been trained to grow up around a central trunk (the standard). This means all the stunning foliage and blooming of larger, spreading shrubs can be enjoyed while maximizing vertical space, adding a suburb focal point to your patio garden.

- Hibiscus
- Ligustrum japonicum ‘Texanum’
- Salix integra ‘Hakuro nishiki’
- Portuguese Laurel
- Laurus nobilis
