How to grow Garlic in British Columbia

Growing garlic in BC is easy with the right approach. Here’s a simple guide to get you started:

  • When to Plant: The best time to plant garlic in British Columbia is in the fall, usually between September and November. This allows the garlic to establish roots before the ground freezes.

  • Choosing the Right Garlic: At GARDENWORKS, we offer a variety of garlic types, including hardneck and softneck. Hardneck varieties are well-suited for BC’s colder regions, while softneck varieties thrive in milder areas.

  • Preparing the Soil: Garlic prefers well-drained, fertile soil. Before planting, enrich your soil with compost or well-rotted manure, both available at GARDENWORKS.

  • Planting Tips: Plant garlic cloves pointy side up, about 2 inches deep and 6 inches apart. Space rows 12 inches apart. Water well after planting to help the roots establish.

  • Caring for Your Garlic: Mulch your garlic beds with straw to protect them from winter cold and help retain moisture. Water regularly in the spring, and weed as needed to reduce competition for nutrients.

  • Harvesting Garlic: Garlic is usually ready to harvest in July or August when the lower leaves turn brown. Gently lift the bulbs out of the soil and let them cure in a dry, shaded spot for two weeks.
