How to Find the Perfect Spot for Your Tropical Plant?
Tropical plants have some wishes and needs when it comes to light and temperature. In this article, we’ll highlight the differences between the amount of light and the average amount of light they need. Once you know how to find the perfect spot for your tropical plants, you will see that they look better, healthier, and grow faster.
What Are the Different Amounts of Light Indicated on a Plant Label?
When you buy new plants, the plant label indicates the amount of light that the plant needs for optimal health and growth. We will highlight the difference between these indicators below:
- Low light: this means that no direct sunlight will reach your plant. It’s probably a few feet away from the window.
- Medium light: this is the light that has been diffused, for example, by sheer curtains between the plant and the window. Anything that partially blocks the path between the light and your plant creates medium light. You can also create medium light for a plant by placing it further away from the window. Another option is to have direct sunlight only during specific times of the day, such as in the morning.
- Bright light: this equals full sun, meaning there is no barrier between the plant and the light source. The plant will receive the most bright light possible for an indoor plant, with a minimum of 6 hours per day.
Take into account that the light conditions change throughout the seasons and even throughout the day. Some plants may need a new position when there’s less sunlight in a day.
What is the Difference Between Direct and Indirect Light?
When the path of light is a straight line, without any obstructions, we call this direct light. Indirect light occurs when something diffuses light before it reaches your plants. This could be a curtain, furniture, a tree outside the window, or another plan.
What is the Right Spot for Tropicals?
It takes some time to discover which spot has the right amount of light for the plant’s needs. To do so, take some time to see where the light falls at different times of the day. This helps to categorize spots in your house as bright, medium, or low light. When buying new plants or relocating the plants you currently have, take the plant’s specific needs into consideration to find the best spot. If you continue this process a few times per year with the change of the seasons, you will be able to find the best spot for your tropical plants.
